John Singleton Day in Hollywood
August 26, 2003 Walk of Fame Induction Ceremony
John received the 2234th star on Hollywood Walk of Fame at 11:30am at 6915 Hollywood Boulevard, in front of the east gift shop at Grauman's Chinese Theatre. Among those in attendance for the event were John's mother Shelia Ward; father Danny Singleton; grandmother Audrey Smith; and children Justice, Maasai, and Cleo; as well as childhood friends Jimmy Ray and Michael Winters, who were the real-life inspirations for the Boyz N the Hood characters Ricky and Doughboy, respectively. Speeches were delivered by Tyrese; 2 Fast 2 Furious producer Neal H. Moritz; Rosewood co-star Jon Voight; Ike Turner; and Laurence Fishburne, who read a letter written by Dr. Maya Angelou. (Unfortunately, I was unable to get any shots of Voight and Fishburne while at the podium.) Other luminaries on hand were John's longtime film editor Bruce Cannon, former Columbia Pictures VP of Production Stephanie Allain (now owner and president of Homegrown Films), and former Columbia Pictures VP of Publicity Mark Gill (currently president of Warner Independent Pictures).
